The Four Color Media Monitor

This short item tells what the producers of the Jessica Jones series on Netflix were originally thinking of developing it as, and it wasn't a program focusing foremost on sexual assault:

"We never walked into the writers' room going, ‘We are now going to take on rape and abuse and feminism,’” showrunner Melissa Rosenberg told reporters at the Television Critics Association winter press tour on Sunday. “We walked in telling a story for this character and by being true to her character, it was true to the issues.”

Rosenberg credited the incredible writing of Brian Michael Bendis, who created the Jessica Jones character, played in the series by Krysten Ritter, for the story that’s been the subject of countless thinkpieces. [...]

Gee, if only she knew whatever credence could be given to Alias cannot be given to most of Bendis' other work, which doesn't do justice for serious issues. In 2006, two years after the terrible job he did with Avengers: Disassembled, which turned Scarlet Witch into a cliche of craziness, he wrote a story in Avengers where Hawkeye took advantage of an amnesiac Wanda. And let's not forget that time where he wrote a villain called the Hood assaulting Tigra, for nothing more than cheap sensationalism. Or the time when he prosecuted Jean Grey in yet another revolting regurgitation of the Phoenix saga. Some of his dialogue for the ladies in Avengers and X-Men is very weak too. And that weighs against whatever talent he allegedly displayed in Alias.

Too bad the producers seem oblivious to all that.
